This years winners of The Danny Kyle Stage at Celtic Connections, The Chaplins are Jill (lead vocals, guitar, banjo, ukulele, harmonica), Lisa (drums, percussion, vocals, ukulele) and John (double bass). With their timeless feel, The Chaplins will appeal to all - eight or eighty you will find yourself mesmerised by this distinctive trio. They formed in July 2012, getting their name from lead singer Jill’s borderline obsession with Charlie Chaplin. With their 1920’s dress sense and quirky, Americana sound, The Chaplins are a unique addition to the music world.
The three band members are accomplished musicians in their own right who together as a unit create a distinctive sound, with soaring harmonies and foot stomping music. Listening to The Chaplins is an enjoyable experience but seeing them perform live is an event you’ll never forget. There is an edge to their music. They are by no means a trio singing old time country songs about dogs, heartbreak and front porches. The music is pleasantly deceiving. Jill has produced perfectly crafted, meaningful songs with unforgettable melodies and poignant lyrics. With the help of Lisa and John these songs are beautifully brought to life.
The bands debut EP, Introducing The Chaplins, has a very honest, traditional feel, but would by no means be out of place in today’s contemporary music scene. With their influences ranging from Emmylou Harris to Stevie Wonder, Alison Krauss to Ray LaMontagne, these three musicians have created a five-track piece of magic that is set to resonate around the globe.
